Technical & Entrepreneurial Skill Training

Skills for Dignity: AFRIEDO’s Technical and Entrepreneurial Training for Vulnerable Youth

For many young people, the path to a stable future isn’t blocked by a lack of ambition — it’s blocked by a lack of access. Without formal education or completed training, countless capable youths are left out of the job market entirely, not because they lack potential, but because they were never given the chance to build a marketable skill. African Rights for Economic Development (AFRIEDO) is closing that gap through its technical and entrepreneurial skills training program, designed specifically for vulnerable youth who have little or no formal training behind them.

Practical Skills, Real Opportunity

AFRIEDO’s program targets young people who have dropped out of school, never completed formal training, or simply never had access to one in the first place. Rather than offering theory alone, the focus is on hands-on, practical, market-ready skills in trades that are in steady demand:

  • Solar and electrical installation
  • Plumbing and masonry
  • Wood works and carpentry
  • Beauty and cosmetics
  • Fashion and Dress making

These trades were chosen deliberately. Each one offers a realistic, accessible route into self-employment or formal work — skills that can be put to use almost immediately, in communities that need them, without requiring years of formal schooling first.

The Impact, in Numbers

The results speak for themselves. To date, 128 youths have been trained through the program — including 83 girls and women and 45 young men — each one now equipped with a practical, marketable skill.

The ripple effects go well beyond the individual. 7 savings groups have formed among beneficiaries, and household income has climbed dramatically as a result of the training, from an average of Ksh 8,000 per month to Ksh 25,000 per month. 12 businesses have been successfully registered, established, and are now running.

Some of the most striking outcomes come from the motorcycle and boda boda trade: 18 young men trained through the program have purchased their own motorcycles and are now employing riders of their own, turning a single opportunity into work for someone else. Beneficiaries have also gone on to open 6 motorcycle repair shops, 3 eateries, and 8 salon businesses — all currently up and running.

From Training to Entrepreneurship

What sets this program apart is its ambition beyond the workshop. AFRIEDO isn’t simply teaching trades — it is mentoring entrepreneurs. The goal is for every trainee to walk away not just with a skill, but with the confidence and basic business know-how to set up their own venture: a solar installation business, a carpentry workshop, a salon, a tailoring shop.

This entrepreneurial focus matters because it multiplies impact. A trained youth who starts their own business doesn’t just earn an income for themselves — they create jobs for others, strengthening their local economy and giving even more young people a foothold.

Earning With Dignity

At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful idea: dignity through honest work. For vulnerable youth who may have faced exclusion, poverty, or limited opportunity, the ability to earn a living through skilled, respected work changes more than a bank balance — it restores a sense of purpose, agency, and self-worth.

Rather than dependency, AFRIEDO’s approach builds capability. Rather than short-term relief, it invests in long-term self-sufficiency.

Building a Ripple Effect

From the 128 trained youths has come 12 thriving businesses, 7 savings groups, and a network of young entrepreneurs now employing others in their own communities. Every young person trained through this program represents more than an individual success story — they represent a future small business owner, a future employer, and a future mentor to the next generation of trainees. By equipping vulnerable youth with technical skills and entrepreneurial mind-sets, AFRIEDO is helping build an ecosystem where opportunity multiplies — one skilled, dignified livelihood at a time.
